As someone who typically prefers the minimalist look when it comes to makeup, I must confess that eye shadow is one of my favorite cosmetic products. I adore my mineral foundation and I love my lip balm, but when my eyes need a little extra-special “pop,” I turn to my trusty eye shadow.
There’s just one, not-so-teeny problem with most conventional eye shadows: chemicals. From artificial dyes to talc, there many be some unpleasant ingredients lurking in that colorful powder or cream.
So – why not make your own? It’s a lot easier than you think. And thanks to nature’s bounty of colorful hues, you’re sure to find a shade that matches your mood.
To make your eyeshadow, you’ll first have to start with a base of arrowroot powder – mixed with a bit of shea butter to help keep the shadow on your lids. The amounts of each depend on how much you’re making, the consistency you prefer and the color you’re trying to make – I recommend testing out a few batches before settling on something.
To add color, use 1 or more the following:
- Organic cocoa powder (brown shades)
- Beet root powder (pink shades) – you can buy the powder in bulk or break open capsules
- Turmeric powder (yellow shades)
- Spirulina powder (green shades)
Making your own eyeliner is a similar process – a bit of coconut oil or shea butter mixed with cocoa power (brown) or charcoal (black). Just be sure to avoid getting any of the ingredients into your eyes, just as you do with conventional cosmetics.
