Know what I love? Walking out of a salon with a freshly shampooed, styled and fabulously shiny head of hair. Every so often, the stylist will talk me into taking home a bottle of professional salon-strength shampoo or conditioner – so I can achieve the same shine and softness at home. But the problem is, those products are typically way too expensive to buy on a regular basis!

So… what’s a girl to do? Here are my tips for getting salon-worthy hair at home:

My first tip? Resist the temptation to buy your hair products at the salon. Especially now that Vitacost.com carries all the best salon brands for way less!

Since there are so many options available, I’ll highlight a few of my favorites:

1. Shampoo:

Tip: Instead of picking a generic shampoo, shop for a product that suits your specific needs.

Fine hair? Try a salon-strength product with natural thickening agents, such as Paul Mitchell Lemon Sage Thickening Shampoo.

Color-treated? Go for a gentle, strengthening product – like Dermorganic Shampoo with Argan Oil (it’s sulfate free!).

Curly ‘do? Restore shine and bounce with DevaCurl Low-Poo Hair Cleanser.

2. Conditioner:

Tip:   Toss out that shampoo/conditioner combo and pick a professional conditioner that matches your hair type.

For color-treated or fine hair, I like Nioxin Scalp Therapy – it’s lightweight but provides plenty of moisture. For those who need an extra boost of moisture and nourishment, I recommend Matrix Biolage Hydratherapie Conditioning Balm.

3. Special treatments:

Oops – did you accidentally fry your lustrous locks with the flat-iron or blow-dryer? Fear not. You can quickly repair heat-related damage and protect against future mishaps with a special treatment, such as Rusk Sensories Moist Treatment.
