Our aromas affect people around us. When I’m traveling, I find myself confronted with the entire aroma spectrum of the human experience on airplanes, in cabs and on trains. Sometimes, I take a whiff and smile, but more often than not, I don’t.

I’m comforted knowing that I generally contribute something pleasant to the mix. I have heard time and again when traveling, “You smell good” or “You smell like a spa.” My secret? I wear diluted essential oils as a perfume. It’s a good way to not only affect my own mood, but the mood of my fellow passengers and the quality of the air around me as well.

Nothing can turn a stranger off more than foul body odor or an overwhelming perfume. According to a newly released poll from Harris Interactive, 63 percent of travelers would prefer to sit next to a crying baby on an airplane rather than a smelly adult. (“Smelly” isn’t just a foul odor — it’s anything that’s overpowering or could potentially turn someone off — so remember not to overdo even pleasant scents.)

If you want to positively influence your environment and the people around you, consider incorporating more pure essential oils into your life and personal care. These natural plant extracts bring a number of emotional benefits to the user. And, when diluted appropriately, they make mild perfumes that typically bring a smile to the face instead of tears to the eyes.

Here are three oils and an easy perfume recipe to try:

Bergamot: This essential oil is known to combat odors. It’s a pleasant, citrus aroma and tends to be a crowd pleaser in personal products and natural perfumes.

Lavender: One of the most universally pleasing aromas, lavender is both calming to the wearer and to those around the wearer.

Vanilla: A popular aroma that makes us feel comforted, vanilla wears well and makes people feel at home with you.
