How to (Safely) Weather the Weather

Q: When and how and can I exercise safely during bad weather conditions?

Amy Marsh answers:

A:  Winter is just around the corner, which means the possibility of gusty wind, falling snow and slippery ice – not to mention cooler temps.  But don’t let these weather woes put your training in hibernation. Follow these quick tips for staying safe and warm during outdoor workouts:

You may run faster knowing there’s a cup of hot chocolate waiting for you.

Cover your head with a hat as heat can escape from the top of your head.

Train in lighted areas whenever you can.   If you work out early in the morning or evening when it’s dark, plan on wearing reflective gear so that you can be seen.

Gear up with fuel and accessories that will help get your mind off the cold, wet weather. Take an energizing gel or bar to keep your body moving even when you can’t feel your fingers and toes. Listening to music  is another great way to tune out and stay motivated.

Dress appropriately in cold weather.   Wear layers so that you can remove a layer as you sweat and add layers when you start to cool off.

Keep hands and feet warm as these parts of your body have the least amount of blood flow, which could eventually lead to frostbite.

Exercise indoors if the windchill is extreme.

The winter months may not be the best time of year for exercising outside, but a little preparation will help you weather the storms.
