June 8: What’s Hot (and Not) in Health Today

What’s hot (and not) in health today? Let’s explore the latest health trends and info, including health-supporting antioxidants and fire-starting sunscreens.

Hot:

Resveratrol. Touted for its antioxidant benefits, resveratrol is a plant substance found in grape seed, skins and red wine. Why should you take note of this nutrient? The antioxidant polyphenols in resveratrol actually protect healthy cells from the potential harm caused by free radicals. Resveratrol may also support healthy cardiovascular function.*

Strontium. This often-neglected mineral usually takes a backseat to calcium, but it plays a very similar role in the body, promoting healthy bone formation and overall bone density.* Strontium is found in supplement form, as well as in leafy green veggies, whole grains and certain spices.

Avocado. Just in time for summer (think guacamole dip!), avocado is getting great press for its amazing nutrient content. In case you needed a reason to dig into that big bowl of dip, avocados are chock-full of fiber, vitamins (especially folate and vitamin E) and minerals (including potassium and magnesium). They’re also an excellent source of healthy monounsaturated fats.

Not:

Chemical sunscreens. They may protect you from sunburn, but many sunscreens are made with chemicals – flammable chemicals that can ignite near an open flame. A Massachusetts man recently suffered second-degree burns when he stepped in front of the grill after applying aerosol sunscreen.

Opt for chemical-free coverage this summer, with a natural sunscreen made from protective minerals and herbal extracts.
