A: Maca is a root vegetable that grows wild in South American countries, including Peru, Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina. It’s in the same family as radishes and turnips. Native Peruvians living in the Andean highlands have been growing and consuming maca for approximately 5,000 years. Maca is considered to be a modern-day superfood and is an excellent source of various vitamins, minerals, fiber, amino acids and essential fatty acids.

A: Maca may have several health benefits due to its excellent nutritional profile. However, it’s  most commonly used for its impact on energy.* Maca is often referred to as “Peruvian ginseng,” since it may actually help to promote energy and an elevated mood.* Additionally, maca is popular among athletes for the stamina support they feel from adding this super root to their diet.*And, it’s worth noting maca’s ability to support sexual health in both men and women. It may help provide a bump in libido, as well as an increase in endurance.

Q: How do I take maca?

Maca can be taken in various forms. The raw vegetable is used in hundreds of recipes and may be available in your local supermarket, but it is most often consumed in capsule or powder form. Maca is often dried, which preserves it for several years, making it ideal for supplemental use. Starting with 500 mg to 1,000 mg, 3-4 times a week is a good way to begin supplementing with maca. Maca powder is often added to protein shakes or breakfast smoothies to start your day off with on a high note. Here is a quick shake to try out tomorrow morning:

Maca Morning Boost

Blend all of the following ingredients together in a blender:

1 cup almond milk or coconut milk
1-2 tsp. maca powder
1-2 scoops organic hemp protein powder (feel free to substitute your favorite protein powder)
½ frozen banana
sweeten to taste with raw honey, stevia, or agave nectar
