Motherhood is a sport that requires energy, mental toughness, patience and a laundry list of other traits. Before you fall apart thinking that you could never possibly be this idealistic super mom, I’m here to tell you that you can achieve the physical and emotional fitness every mom needs. All you have to do is exercise!

Mom, Exercise Gives You EnergyOver the next few weeks, I’m going to prove to you that regular exercise is exactly what you need to stay razor-sharp and ready for anything motherhood may bring.

Let’s start with the number one benefit of exercise: Energy.

Do you want to be the parent who is out of breath after a few minutes of chasing your kids, or do you want to running right there with them? It’s a no-brainer. It may seem impossible to keep up with the endless energy of youth, but it can be done — thanks to exercise! Regular, moderate to intense exercise has proven to increase energy levels, because it promotes blood circulation which consequently wakens your body and mind. As exercise becomes a part of your lifestyle, you’ll see your body transform into a powerhouse of strength and endurance. There’s no better excuse to dedicate an hour of your day to the gym.

But, not only do you need to work out for your kids, it’s important to work out with them. Hit the neighborhood park for some quality play time, or let your little ones tag along to the gym. (Most fitness centers have child care for a small fee.) Pack a gym bag for your tot, so when they waltz into the club with their own “gear” they’ll feel confident and excited to be there — just like Mom! Be sure to pack healthy snacks,  a towel, a change of clothes and a bottle of water or milk to keep them hydrated. Bring two shaker cups and fill one with a pre-mixed fruit smoothie and the other with your favorite protein powder. You’ll have the perfect post-workout shake and your little one will have her very own post-play recovery drink.

The next time you’re feeling a little sluggish, go to the gym, pop in an exercise DVD at home or head to the park and chase your rug-rat around. Before you know it, you’ll feel the energy boost you need to tackle the next mommy-do project.
