Springtime brings many wonderful things””blossoming flowers, sunshine, moderate temperatures. But it may also bring unwanted pests that can invade your home and make outdoor activities seemingly impossible. Unfortunately, many pesticides and repellants can contain harmful ingredients that may be hazardous to your health or the environment. Let’s explore some natural, effective and chemical-free ingredients that can keep pests at bay:
- Citronella. This essential oil is a widely popular natural insect repellant, mostly used to ward off mosquitoes. Citronella can be found in candles, sprays, torches, oils and more.
- Cinnamon. I have personally tried cinnamon as an ant repellant. Sprinkled just outside your front door, cinnamon may help stop the invasion of annoying ants. In diluted oil or spray form, it may also help protect you from mosquito attack.
- Lemongrass. Closely related to citronella, lemongrass can help drive pests away. A barrier of lemongrass candles at a picnic or other outdoor event can help keep your activity insect-free.
- Rosemary. Used in conjunction with other essential oils (such as citronella or lemongrass), rosemary can make an excellent and effective insect repellant.
- Peppermint. Humans generally love it, but mosquitoes and fleas tend to stay away from peppermint.
Essential oils can cause irritation and are not meant to be directly applied to the skin without dilution. Before applying it all over, test a small amount on your forearm to ensure that your natural insect repellant doesn’t repel you as well!
