Cold-water, fatty fish, such as salmon, tuna and mackerel, contain high levels of omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFA's), which have been shown to have many beneficial effects on health. Fish oils, in liquid or capsule form, are a great way to obtain EFA's, especially when you aren't able (or willing) to eat two or more servings of fresh fish per week.
Studies show that the EFA's in fish oil may support cardiovascular health. They've been found support healthy levels of triglycerides already in the normal range. Fish oil may also help support a healthy mood.
The daily recommended dose of fish oil for healthy adults is 1,000 mg. This amount varies if effects are desired for certain conditions. For example, 3,000 mg may be taken to support heart, respiratory, immune and skin health. To avoid fish oil "aftertaste," try splitting your dosage up throughout the day and always taking capsules with a meal.
