Whether used for relaxation or decoration, scented candles provide a pleasant escape. But what exactly is lurking in that jar of wax? The unpleasant answer may surprise you.
If your candle contains any of the following, it may be doing more harm than good:
Paraffin wax: One of the most popular types of candle wax, paraffin is actually a waste product derived from petroleum. When burned, paraffin can release several toxins including those normally found in diesel fuel. Paraffin candles can also produce soot that may linger on your walls and fabrics. Beeswax or soy wax candles are natural and safe alternatives to paraffin.
Metal wick: Within the wick of your candle, you may notice a small metal wire this helps to keep the wick from falling over and extinguishing the flame. Unfortunately, this metal may contain lead, which can release into the air when burned. Look for a candle with a wick made of cotton or paper.
Artificial fragrance/oil: That sweet smell of flowers is not, in fact, from flowers. If your candle contains an artificial fragrance or oil, the pleasant smell may be caused by a combination of questionable chemicals, including hormone-disrupting phthalates. Take advantage of the aromatherapy benefits of nature opt for a candle made with natural essential oils instead.
