Achooooo! Maybe it’s a cold. Perhaps it’s the flu. But when you’re on a diet and become sick, it’s time to figure out your priorities as well as the nature and severity of your illness.

Dieting When Sick

Consider the following:

  • Do you have a fever? If so, ditch the diet and focus on staying hydrated.
  • Are you feeling nauseated? If so, ditch the diet and choose foods that are easy to digest and tolerate.
  • Do you have a sore throat? If so, ditch the diet and select foods that you can swallow without pain.
  • Are you so sick that you need to see your doctor? Then check with your healthcare provider to find out what you should eat. For example, some medications may need to be consumed with food, or you may need to avoid certain foods.
  • Are you just mildly ill, perhaps with a slight cold? Then stay with your diet.

Here are some tips on what to choose for different scenarios and diets:

  • Anytime you’re sick, it’s important to stay hydrated. Try peppermint tea to breathe more easily.
  • Feeling nauseated? Ginger might help, such as Traditional Medicinals.
