Six Healthy Products for Baby Safety Month

September is Baby Safety Month ““ so it’s the perfect time to evaluate the baby products you use every day, from diapers and soap to food and toys. Are you giving your baby the very best? Read on to find out more.


1. Natural, non-toxic cleaning products: Conventional cleaning products are typically made with numerous hazardous chemicals that can leave behind chemical residue or pollute the air inside your home. Make the switch to baby-friendly, non-toxic cleaners made from natural and gentle ingredients, such as vegetable oils, baking soda and plant-sourced fragrances.

2. Natural bath & hygiene products: Wipes, ointments, shampoos, soaps, sunscreens, lotions ““ the list goes on. There are many bath and hygiene products on the market, and most are made with questionable chemical ingredients (including mineral oil, parabens and more) that can irritate or dry out your baby’s sensitive skin or cause other adverse effects. Instead, look for products made with natural, soothing and nourishing ingredients, such as zinc, aloe vera, calendula, chamomile and plant-based oils.

3. BPA-free plastics: Many toys, bottles, cups, plates, spoons, etc. are made from hard plastic. Unfortunately, these items likely contain BPA, a chemical used to strengthen plastic. Exposure to heat and chemical detergents can cause this compound to seep into the product’s contents. BPA may impair reproductive organs and disrupt normal endocrine function, as well as cause other damaging health effects. Choose BPA-free plastics whenever possible to avoid the hazards of this chemical.

4. Organic cotton toys: Because most toys (even stuffed animals) end up in your baby’s mouth, it’s best to choose products made from organic materials, such as organic cotton. Organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides, so you don’t have to worry about toxic chemical residue on your child’s favorite bunny rabbit or teddy bear.

5. Healthy food and snacks: At meal time, go for healthy foods and snacks made from nutrient-rich, wholesome organic fruits and veggies and other minimally processed ingredients. Steer clear of products with chemical preservatives, fillers, artificial colors or flavors, high fructose corn syrup and added sugars.

6. Chlorine-free diapers:  Many popular brands of diapers are bleached with chlorine, which can leave behind a toxic residue that may irritate your baby’s delicate skin and can make its way into the environment after disposal.  To protect your baby’s health and the health of the planet, consider choosing cloth or chlorine-free diapers.
