Go ahead and hit the snooze button, it’s good for you! A good night’s rest (at least seven to eight hours) is crucial to your body’s overall health. Consider these six reasons why you need to sleep in:

Reasons to sleep in

1. Energy. This may sound like an overly obvious observation, but the truth is that many people who lack energy simply don’t get enough sleep. Getting a good night’s rest will help you avoid that dreaded 3 p.m. feeling of lethargy the next day. You need at least seven to eight hours of sleep per night to make sure your body has enough time to recharge for the long day ahead.

2. Skin Renewal. Banish those under eye bags by staying in bed just a little bit longer! Getting the right amount of sleep can give your skin enough time to repair itself and recover from the many stresses of daily life.

3. Muscle Building. Your workout doesn’t end when you leave the gym. While you’re nestled in your bed, your body actually works hard to repair and rebuild broken-down muscle tissue and releases hormones that help support muscle growth.

4. Weight Management.  Drowsiness can spell disaster for your healthy diet. According to recent research, lack of sleep may actually lead to the release of stress hormones that trigger overeating or cravings for junk food. Getting enough rest can give you the energy you need to make good food choices and stay on track toward healthy weight management.

5. Stress & Mood. Sleeping in can help fight that frazzled feeling! Adequate rest can actually lower your levels of certain hormones associated with stress, such as cortisol. A good night’s sleep can also promote a balanced mood.

6. Mental Focus. Want to stay sharp? Get more shuteye! Sleep patterns are closely tied with focus and mental performance. Getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep per night can support healthy cognitive function and help you stay focused throughout the day.
