Q: What is apple cider vinegar?
A: If you’re reading this blog, there’s a pretty good chance you already know about apple cider vinegar, or perhaps you have some in your pantry now. Apple cider vinegar is one of the most multipurpose health tonics on the market and can be an excellent addition to your healthy lifestyle. It’s easy to incorporate into your diet but even easier to take as a capsule with your other daily vitamins and minerals.
Apple cider vinegar is made from pulverized apples that have been fermented. The organic variety (made from organic apples) provides the “mother” of vinegar, which is simply the sediment that’s produced during fermentation. The “mother” has a cloudy, string-like appearance, but it’s also the reason for apple cider vinegar’s rich amber color. Don’t be put off by the odd consistency, however, as the “mother” is simply a sign of nutrient-rich, unpasteurized vinegar.
Q: What are the benefits of apple cider vinegar?
A: Apple cider vinegar has a multitude of benefits, both internally and externally. In addition to the natural vitamins, minerals and amino acids, apple cider vinegar with “mother” contains probiotics for healthy internal flora and digestion.* For these reasons alone, apple cider vinegar is becoming a staple in many modern diet plans. But that’s not all…
Apple cider vinegar is also used in a variety of beauty concoctions, including face masks, creams and toners. Some people have found it to help promote smooth, clear and healthy skin. Additionally, apple cider vinegar can act as a quick pick-me-up during the day. Simply add a teaspoon to a glass of cold water, or sprinkle over your midday salad or steamed veggies.
Q: How do I take apple cider vinegar?
Apple cider vinegar is most often taken in its organic liquid form with the “mother.” This is by far the most potent form and the best choice for taking apple cider vinegar. It can be taken “straight” or mixed with plain water, in smoothies or with juice. Alternatively, it can be poured on top of your favorite foods or used as a base for homemade dressings. For those who don’t like the taste or consistency, apple cider vinegar is available in capsule form. These typically provide 200, 500 or 1,500 milligrams of apple cider vinegar extract per serving, many of them standardized to ensure you’re getting adequate amounts of the active ingredient, acetic acid.
Bragg, the famous manufacturer of apple cider vinegar, has also started making delicious ready-to-drink beverages in more palatable flavors such as apple cinnamon, grape and acai, ginger and more! These may be a great compromise, as they mask the tart vinegar taste.
