Q: How do I take apple cider vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar is most often taken in its organic liquid form with the “mother.” This is by far the most potent form and the best choice for taking apple cider vinegar. It can be taken “straight” or mixed with plain water, in smoothies or with juice. Alternatively, it can be poured on top of your favorite foods or used as a base for homemade dressings. For those who don’t like the taste or consistency, apple cider vinegar is available in capsule form. These typically provide 200, 500 or 1,500 milligrams of apple cider vinegar extract per serving, many of them standardized to ensure you’re getting adequate amounts of the active ingredient, acetic acid.

Bragg, the famous manufacturer of apple cider vinegar, has also started making delicious ready-to-drink beverages in more palatable flavors such as apple cinnamon, grape and acai, ginger and more! These may be a great compromise, as they mask the tart vinegar taste.

Below is a do-it-yourself healthy salad dressing, using apple cider vinegar as the star ingredient.

Two-Minute Vinaigrette

Low-Calorie ACV Dressing

1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tsp honey mustard
1 tbsp lemon juice
¼ tsp sea salt
A few drops of stevia or fresh fruit for sweetness (optional)


  1. In a jar, shake all ingredients together.
  2. If you don’t have a jar, pour everything into a small bowl and whisk until thoroughly combined.
  3. Dressing is best if made a day ahead and stored in the fridge to allow flavors to incorporate.

Simple, Skin-Smoothing Face Mask

To make: In a non-metal bowl, use a wooden spoon or spatula to mix equal parts clay with apple cider vinegar. Stir the mixture until it becomes a smooth paste. Add more clay or vinegar as needed.

To use: 

  1. Spread about a tablespoon of the mask all over your face and/or neck area.
  2. Let it dry for 5-10 minutes for delicate skin; 15-20 minutes for normal skin.
  3. Thoroughly rinse off with lukewarm water.
