They promise long-lasting moisture, smooth, supple skin and a radiant glow. But some popular body lotions may contain less-than-desirable ingredients that can actually dry out your skin and adversely impact your health. Are any of these substances lurking in your favorite lotion?
- Parabens: Parabens are chemical preservatives found in nearly all commercial cosmetic and skin care products, including lotions. Parabens are dangerous because they may disrupt normal hormone and endocrine system processes. You can find them listed on the label as methylparaben, proplyparaben and butylparaben.
- Artificial Fragrance: The satisfying scent of your body lotion may be the result of hundreds of combined chemicals. One group of chemicals known as phthalates is often found in artificial fragrance and can cause genetic defects and hormone disruption in both humans and animals.
- Propylene Glycol: This ingredient is included in lotions to help the skin retain moisture. Unfortunately, propylene glycol has actually been known to cause skin irritation. Other side effects include headache, nausea and kidney problems.
- Mineral Oil/Petroleum: Products containing mineral oil or petroleum may provide temporary moisture, but these ingredients may actually lead to dry skin, irritations and clogged pores by inhibiting your skin’s natural oil production.
