3 Ways to Support Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts

by | Read time: 2 minutes

Due to the widespread devastation of Hurricane Harvey, it’s clear Texas will need a nation of love and support in the coming weeks, months and possibly years. To aid in the relief efforts, Vitacost associates are dedicating their support to three distinct charities. These organizations provide local care to the areas affected by Hurricane Harvey and have a special focus on particularly vulnerable groups, including pets, babies and seniors. If you’ve been thinking about donating, too, but aren’t sure where to start, we strongly recommend checking out these great options. Every little bit helps!

1. Global Giving

Rated 4 stars by Charity Navigator, Global Giving is the largest crowdfunding community. They have set up a specific fund for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, which will support survivors with food, water, medicine and longer-term recovery needs. All donations will exclusively support relief and recovery efforts (no administrative fees). The fund’s goal is set at $2 million.

The Texas Diaper Bank was established in 1997 to meet the basic needs of vulnerable babies, children with disabilities and senior citizens. As a partner of the National Diaper Bank Network, they provide access to diapers (over 1.1 million diapers each year), incontinence supplies and other goods through direct services and partnerships with other non-profit organizations. They are currently taking monetary donations to provide the necessary supplies for little ones affected by Hurricane Harvey.

They specialize in taking in key groups of animals, including puppies with parvovirus, unweaned kittens, cats with ringworm, as well as dogs and cats with special behavioral or medical needs. As of Saturday, APA! has taken in over 235 animals and continue to set up efforts to save animals in the Houston area. You can donate through their site. There is a 3% processing fee, but you can choose to cover the fees so that 100% of your donation goes to the shelter.
