The end of summer is coming near, which could be good or bad. The sticky summer weather will be subsiding soon, but the kids probably aren’t pining to go back to school. Regardless of how you feel about it, end this season on a high note. Gather good friends and family for a simple and delicious cookout.
Everyone needs a treat now and then, so let’s talk about dessert first.
Tried & True S’mores
1 bag of marshmallows — They’re naturally fat-free. That’s healthy, right?
5 chocolate bars — Choose dark chocolate for a “nutritious” option or milk chocolate with nuts for more interesting flavor.
1 package graham crackers — We always go the gluten-free route.
Directions (if you even need them): Start a fire and grab a few roasting rods. Let the little ones roast their own marshmallows to pure gooey heaven. Top a graham cracker section with a square of chocolate, add the marshmallow and sandwich it all together. The kids will soon be screaming, “I want s’more s’mores, please!”
Hot Diggity Hot Dogs and Hamburgers
Celebrate the final days of the heat and humidity by grilling America’s favorite foods. Once you have your dogs and patties grilled to perfection, let your guests choose from a unique array of toppings.
– Horseradish-style mustard for a little kick in the mouth
– Fresh or prepared pesto to top a burger (pairs well with mozzarella and a slice of tomato)
– Hummus is creamy and comes in fun flavors like sundried tomato
– Organic ketchup because you have to offer traditional toppings, too
– Relish in sweet or dill relish — great on hot dogs or hamburgers!
You don’t have to limit yourself to these traditional cookout foods. Make a salad with a healthy vinaigrette dressing or make a plain fruit salad. If you have more white meat lovers, think about marinading chicken and fish with a fruity dressing for something light and refreshing!
