This back-to-school season is a little different from previous years – particularly for college students. Normally, college students rush to stores to get a head start on purchasing the best dorm decor and school supplies, and they pick up miscellaneous hygienic items afterwards. This year, college students are instead rushing to purchase hand sanitizer, wipes, vitamins and supplements to ensure that returning to campus in a safe manner is even a viable option.
Now more than ever, items that promote health and wellness are imperative in light of the ongoing global pandemic. As college students often live in close quarters and share communal spaces, we especially need to take extra precautions to protect our health, not only for our own sake, but also for the sake of others. Here are a few items that should be on your back-to-college checklist:
Let’s face it, college students typically aren’t the cleanest. That said, sending them off with a bottle or two of hand sanitizer is always a good idea. But this year, it’s absolutely essential to have one on you at all times. The CDC guidelines state that “if soap and water are not available and hands are not visibly dirty, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol may be used.” Hand sanitizer is a good alternative to hand washing when you don’t have enough time to run to the bathroom between classes.
Another great way to stay healthy is to make sure that what you put into your body is actually beneficial for it. A superfood smoothie mix is good for getting nutrients in and satiating thirst at the same time. Since the smoothie takes a few minutes to prepare, it also ensures that you’re setting aside some time to take care of yourself and your body.
Anything that will help boost and keep your immune system strong should be near the top of your essentials list. I’ve had a small section of my dorm room solely dedicated to health supplements since freshman year, and I’d like to think that taking immune gummies, in addition to keeping up with basic hygiene, has helped prevent me from getting sick throughout college. This semester calls for enhanced hygiene habits, so I’ll definitely be taking these on a more regular basis to help maintain my health for my final few months of college.
In the midst of all the focus on physical health, it can be easy to forget about mental health. However, it’s still really important to dedicate some time for yourself to relax every now and then. While you’re working on a long paper or assignment, try putting on a de-stress sheet mask to alleviate some of your worries. That way, you can still be productive while taking care of yourself and your skin.
5. Laundry pods
Laundry rooms tend to be small and stuffy, which means that they’re less than ideal spaces to be in according to the CDC: “indoor spaces are more risky than outdoor spaces where it might be harder to keep people apart and there’s less ventilation.” To minimize the amount of time you have to spend doing your laundry, you might consider laundry pods. These are easy to just pop into the washing machine, simplifying the process and making it quicker for you to get out of the cramped area and back to your room.
I’m a big believer in aromatherapy, so I love to keep products with essential oils in my room as part of my self-care routine. A room freshener with lavender will not only make the air smell nice, but it can also help you relax. If you spray this after doing the laundry, everything will feel and smell clean.
