There are several essential oils that are well known for providing effective and chemical-free cleaning support. However, some of the oils that work best in aromatherapy are also useful in keeping your home healthy, happy and clean.

 Spring Clean with Essential Oils

Lemon essential oil – Brightening lemon has been used in cleaning products for years, not only for aroma, but for its cleansing effect. For a simple wall cleaner to counter spots and marks on walls, add 14 drops of lemon essential oil to ⅛ cup castile soap. Add the mixture to small bucket of warm water and wipe grimy spots and dirt from walls.

Tea tree oil – A must-have in any cleaning regimen, tea tree oil packs a punch in purifying and cleansing countertops, sprayed on doorknobs and light switches and in cleaning the bathroom. For an easy purifying spray, combine 21 drops of tea tree oil, 14 drops of sweet orange oil, 1 ounce white vinegar. Spray on anything that needs purifying and in any space that can use an uplifting boost.

Lavender Essential Oil – Soothing lavender is also an effective cleaner. It helps counter odors, cleans surfaces and freshens the laundry (while keeping the keeper of the clean home peaceful in the process). Here is a great way to incorporate lavender into your laundry.

Homemade Lavender Fabric Softener

Ingredients

1/2 cup vinegar
2 Tbsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. lavender essential oil

Directions

1. Dissolve baking soda in vinegar; stir in lavender essential oil.

2. Add mixture to rinse cycle water or compartment designated for fabric softener.

Tip: If using a dryer, add a wool dryer ball to shorten drying time and soften clothes. To boost the fresh scent of lavender, sprinkle several drops on the dryer ball or on a paper towel and add to the dryer during the cool down cycle.
