A skinny person does not make a healthy person. It took Adrienne a few years to realize this, but our Health Raiser of the Week fully embraces the many benefits of living a healthier lifestyle. As she found out, losing weight is just the tip of the iceberg. Adopting more active and more mindful habits has given her what “skinny” never could: pure, whole-hearted happiness.

Health Raiser Spotlight: Adrienne

What does health mean to you?

Health means being able to be there for my family and friends. I believe that being unhealthy is selfish and takes time away from being able to live your best life with the ones you love. I want to be a good role model for my young daughter, so she has the tools to live the healthiest and happiest life possible.

What inspired you to start living a healthy life?

At first, it was just to be “skinny.” Thankfully as I’ve gotten older and wiser, I’ve learned that living a healthy life results in me living longer, feeling better and oozing with more happiness. I’ve also found that sharing my healthy lifestyle has inspired others to do the same – and that motivates me even more!

What are three things you do to stay healthy?

  1. I always make sure to drink lots of water; it’s a really important habit that so many people overlook.
  2. I try to fit fitness into my daily life no matter what, such as dancing with my two-year-old or choosing a parking spot as far from the store’s door as possible.
  3. I always eat a variety of foods. Many people are afraid of fats and carbs, but they’re a very important part of a well-balanced diet. When you choose healthy fats and complex carbs, you have nothing to worry about.

What is one motivational quote that you live by?

Your mind is a powerful thing. When you fill it with positive thoughts, your life will start to change.

If you were stranded on a desert island, which Vitacost product could you not live without?

Vitacost Extra Virgin Certified Organic Coconut Oil Non-GMO! Coconut oil has so many amazing uses! You can cook with it, use it as a moisturizer for your skin and hair, you can even rub it on your pets for a shinier coat. What’s not to love about that?!

What advice do you have for someone who is trying to live healthier?

Never deprive yourself of things you love. Instead, use moderation and take baby steps. All you have to do is swap out one bad food a week for a healthier option. Eat foods in their natural state (or as close to as possible). Also, get your friends and family involved in healthy activities to make it more fun for everyone. And never shy from asking for help if you need it. Remember, everyone starts at the beginning.

Is there a role model you look up to?

My grandmother – she lived to be 100 years old! She was such an inspiration, living a healthy life until the day she left us. She worked as a nurse until she was late into her 70s and continued to exercise until her mid-90s!
