Which came first, healthiness or happiness? It’s a tough question, but maybe we don’t have to have an answer. Our Health Raiser of the Week, Jermaine, explains that they’re one in the same. But to truly be healthy and happy, you’re going to need to dig deep within yourself. Jermaine offers his tips on how to find that intrinsic positivity.
What does health mean to you?
Health means happiness and appreciating your existence on earth. Health means taking the right steps to living a longer, fuller and more positive life, whether it’s eating clean, exercising daily or something as simple as meditating.
What inspired you to start living a healthy life?
My inspiration for living a healthy lifestyle started from truly embarking on my journey to self-discovery, recognizing my body as a temple and acknowledging that life is a gift. This journey began by me deciding to eliminate unhealthy eating habits, pay attention to what I consume and appreciate the lasting effects of living a healthy lifestyle. With these efforts, I believe I can obtain longevity and true happiness.
What are three things you do to stay healthy?
I stay positive. I believe when you’re in a positive mindset, your actions will also become positive. Smiling is my fuel to get me through a strenuous workout. Even when I’m downing a funny-tasting superfood greens smoothie, I make myself smile and look at the big picture (“think of all those great nutrients you’re getting”). Being positive pays off!
Also, I surround myself with like-minded individuals who also live a healthy lifestyle. Like the saying goes, “birds of a feather flock together.” My friends and I enjoy fun outdoor activities, sharing health tips and new recipes and love testing out the latest workout trend.
Finally, I take time out for myself to meditate in silence and listen to my body and mind. The flow of my breath is how I strengthen my mental health, which is just as important as physical health.
What is one motivational quote that you live by?
“The essence of Zen consists of acquiring a new viewpoint on life.” I live by this quote, because one can exercise or diet religiously. But without purpose, people fall out of their commitments to living a healthy lifestyle. They begin to see it as a chore rather than a way to become a better you. Once you understand your purpose, motivation to strive for greatness will become second nature – just like breathing.
If you were stranded on a desert island, which Vitacost product could you not live without?
I couldn’t be without Vitacost Men’s Once Daily Multi-Vitamin, because it’s packed with nutrients to help me push through my active lifestyle.
What advice do you have for someone who is trying to live healthier?
Do it for yourself. Take time out to mentally prepare and have the right mindset to adapt to the lifetstyle change. Surround yourself with supporting friends and educate yourself. I believe a strong support system to share your progress with will help you along your journey.
Also, have fun with it by trying new, spontaneous activities. Think outside the box or gym. And do the same with your eating habits. Explore various types of recipes or seek health-conscious restaurants for a nice twist.
Is there a role model you look up to?
My role model is the greater person I seek to be. Every day I envision a greater version of myself and meditate on how to unlock the full potential that dwells deep within. This is a reflection of my actions. I’d say the greatest role model for anyone should be their authentic self. There’s no reason not to discover your potential!
