Foods should be functional. They should serve your body in a way that makes sense and makes a positive difference. When you’re active in sports, as Jerry has been since childhood, it’s important to learn the importance of feeding your body well. That wasn’t exactly the case for this Vitacost Health Raiser of the Week, though. It wasn’t until he began studying to become a Physical Education teacher that Jerry fully understood the food-function connection. Now that he teaches it for a living, he’s on a mission to share his knowledge with anyone who will listen.
What does health mean to you?
As a physical education and health teacher, health is literally my bread and butter. I pride myself in eating foods that will benefit my well-being and, of course, exercising almost every day.
What inspired you to start living a healthy life?
The love of sports inspired me to be active. But after learning more in school about how healthy foods benefit the body, I was instantly motivated to overhaul my lifestyle.
What are three things you do to stay healthy?
- I exercise up to six days each week
- I eat foods that nourish my active body.
- I enjoy relaxation and rest whenever I need it.
What is one motivational quote that you live by?
Strength will overcome! This is a reminder to work hard for the things that matter most to me.
If you were stranded on a desert island, what Vitacost product could you not live without?
I couldn’t live without my Vitacost Vanilla Whey Protein Complex!
What advice do you have for someone who is trying to live healthier?
You have to make health a way of life. If you concentrate on dieting, you will fail. The process takes time. Start slowly by removing bad foods from your diet and substitute the unhealthy choices with smarter, healthier ones. When it comes to exercising, find things that are fun and challenging! Set goals to work toward. Lastly, when you reach a goal, treat yourself (maybe not with food, but it should feel like a reward). And never give up!
Is there a role model you look up to?
There isn’t one specific role model I look up to. I’m impressed with anyone who works hard and challenges themselves. I would, however, say that The Rock is a beast! His Instagram videos can really get me going!
