Does it seem like you’ve been looking for any excuse not to work out lately? Have you been hitting the snooze button, snuggling in for extra sleep instead of heading out for that morning run? Are those numbers on the scale or your reflection in the mirror staying the same? It might be time to switch up or intensify your workout.
You’re feeling bored – It’s not uncommon to lose interest in a workout routine. What was once exciting and new is now just something you do every day. To keep exercise fun and engaging, try adding in something different. If you’ve been using the cardio equipment day in and day out, switch things up with a class, such as body shaping or pilates, that incorporates body weight or weighted exercises. Even small changes like creating a new music playlist, taking your workout outdoors or inviting a friend to join you can help keep your workout fresh and interesting.
The challenge is gone – If you feel like your workouts used to be stimulating but now they’re a waste of time, you need a new challenge. Sometimes we don’t realize when it’s time to push ourselves. If you’ve been strength training, maybe it’s time to increase the weights or repetitions (or both). Don’t be afraid to lift more weight, it should be hard in order to challenge your muscles (and no, you won’t automatically bulk up!). If cardio seems to have gotten too easy (which it should after a period of time), try wearing a heart rate monitor to make sure you’re working in the targeted zone for your age.
You’re not seeing results – Hitting a plateau during training is your body’s way of saying, “I’m bored.” A little variety may just be what your body needs. Variety can mean something as simple as doing your strength training in the opposite order, taking a shorter break between sets or adding some hills to your daily run. If you really feel like your body needs a completely different workout, try hiring a qualified personal trainer for a few sessions and have them put together a new program for you.
Your goals have changed – Maybe you started out with a goal to lose weight and spent all of your time on cardio equipment but now want to tone your muscle. Add strength training to your routine. Maybe adding lean muscle was your priority, but now you’re feeling a less flexible. Start a yoga class or add in 10 minutes of stretching each day. Changing goals and workout strategies will keep you active and focused on a healthier you!
Wearing the same old workout outfits – This may seem silly, but it’s funny how a few new pieces of workout clothing can get you excited about exercise. Now that cooler weather is here, invest in a new pair of shoes, workout pants and tops (sports bras included!).
