Tis the season for football. Barbecues and tailgating are highlights of the season, and that means the menu is loaded with fun and tempting finger foods, like nachos, wings and burgers. If the traditional favorites make your tummy grumble and keep you on the sidelines, you need a healthier alternative that’s still finger-licking good. These BBQ Tofu Sliders forgo the calorie-packed bread and artery-clogging beef and instead use leafy greens and tasty marinated tofu for a delicious handheld that will help you stay in the game.

Makes 8

Ingredients

Tofu Patties

1 package extra firm tofu
BBQ sauce
Coconut oil, for frying

Toppings

Vegan mayonnaise
Broccoli slaw
Tomatoes
Onions
Lettuce

Directions

  1. Cut tofu into 8 equal squares. Marinate tofu in BBQ sauce for at least an hour. The longer you can let it marinate, the more flavor you’ll get; overnight is best.
  2. Line a plate with a paper towel. In a skillet over medium-high heat, melt coconut oil. Fry marinated tofu in oil, about 4-5 minutes on each side. Place on prepared plate when finished to drain off an excess oil.
  3. Assemble sliders. Place tofu on top of lettuce “bun,” and top with mayo, broccoli slaw, tomato and onion. Cover with another lettuce “bun.”

Alternate method: Bake tofu instead of frying. Heat oven to 425 degrees F. Bake tofu squares for 30 minutes, flipping halfway through.
