Organic Stovetop Popcorn + Sweet-and-Salty Seasoning

by | Updated: December 4th, 2016

There’s nothing quite like movie theater popcorn. Everyone knows the microwavable variety lacks in both flavor and scent. But who goes to the movies anymore? Unfortunately, much of the once-exciting cinematic experience is lost these days—from the discouraging fat and calorie content in the butter-soaked snack to the not-so-silent whispers that echo throughout the house during crucial scenes. You can’t control impolite patrons or the bright, distracting lights of their handheld screens, but you can enjoy that aromatic popcorn smell and taste at home. And this recipe does it without the unwanted fat and calories. What’s more, a simple seasoning mixture adds a sweet and salty boost worthy of a standing ovation.

Homemade Popcorn with Sweet and Salty Seasoning

Ingredients

Seasoning

1 Tbsp. organic sugar
1 Tbsp. kosher salt
1 tsp. smoked paprika
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. nutritional yeast
1 tsp. onion powder
½ tsp. ground black pepper

Popcorn

Organic popcorn
Organic virgin coconut oil

Directions

  1. Prepare the seasoning. In small bowl or jar, combine all ingredients and mix until thoroughly combined. Set aside.
  2. Make the popcorn. Using a popcorn maker or large pot with a lid over medium heat, add ½ – 1 tablespoon of coconut oil (for every ¼ – ½ cup of kernels) and let the oil melt.
  3. When fully melted, add desired amount of kernels to pot. Cook covered for a few minutes, shaking every 15 seconds to prevent burning. It’s done when you haven’t heard popping for 3-5 seconds. Remove from heat and shake pot again.
  4. In large bowl, add popcorn and sprinkle with as much seasoning as desired.
