Resolution Check-In: Don’t Give Up!

It’s been more than two weeks since the new year began. That means it’s been more than two weeks since you vowed to hit the gym, skip diet soda or sink your teeth into healthier foods.

Statistically speaking, more than 80% of resolutions fail. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Consider these important factors:

1. It can take up to 60 days for a new habit to take hold. Patience is a virtue, especially when it comes to correcting bad behaviors or starting new routines. Don’t expect to fall in love with hempseed overnight, or to be motivated enough to make   it to the gym every morning. Give yourself some time, and don’t let one (or two, or three) slip-ups set you back.

2. Small, specific goals are better than big, broad ones. If you resolved to cut out sugar entirely, or to go for a run every day, you might be setting yourself up for failure. Skip the sweeping changes and stick to smaller, more specific ambitions – like switching to stevia in your coffee or vowing to take 10,000 steps at least three days per week. (Wearing a pedometer is a must for that last one!) Once you accomplish these small goals, you can start working your way up to bigger ones.

3. It’s OK to make adjustments. If your goals just aren’t working out, don’t be afraid to change them. After all, making any change is better than no change at all!
