Homemade Spiced Pear Butter

Anything apple butter can do, this pear butter can do at least equally well, if not, dare I say, better. Whether you spread it on toast, stir it into oatmeal and yogurt or eat it right off the spoon, its spiced sweetness will make you forget all about the more well-known apple version. Bonus? This treat freezes well, so you get to enjoy it long after pears have gone out of season.

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, combine pears, lemon juice, maple syrup and star anise. Bring to a boil, then reduce to simmer. Cover and cook for about 25-35 minutes or until pears are soft. Stir often to prevent burning.
  2. Remove from heat and let cool for about 30 minutes. Once cool, remove star anise and set aside.
  3. In food processor, blend pear mixture until smooth.
  4. Return mixture to pot. Add star anise again, plus zest and spices. Cook on low heat until mixture thickens, stirring often. (Note: for thick pear butter, you’ll need to cook longer, maybe up to an hour.)
  5. Transfer pear butter to jars and store in the fridge for up to 1 week or in the freezer up to 1 month.
