Usually when you hear the word “workout,” you think of the gym. It’s true that the gym is a great place to exercise””you get access to machines you probably don’t have at home. But sometimes it’s a good thing to change up your workouts, leave the heavy machinery at home, and take it outside. A break from routine is a good way to “shock” your body. And there’s no time like the early summer to enjoy the great outdoors.
Here are some outdoor workout ideas:
Hit the trail
Fitness trails are great””whether you’re walking, running, biking or rollerblading. Stop at small workout stations along the way to get in pull ups or abdominal exercises.
Boot camp
Usually moderated by a personal trainer or fitness instructor, these workouts are pretty intense””yet very different from a traditional workout you would get in the gym.
Burn some calories in the pool””or get adventurous and make waves in an ocean or lake. Not a fan of the backstroke? Try stand-up paddle boarding or kayaking.
Yoga, anyone?
Yoga doesn’t have to be confined to a studio – find a group class (or go solo) at the beach or a peaceful park for a relaxing, refreshing change of scenery.
Things to remember:
When taking your workouts outdoors, be sure to stay safe. During the day, use a sweat-resistant sunscreen and drink water regularly to keep your body hydrated. If you’re running at night, wear bright-colored clothing or shoes with reflective material. Consider applying a natural insect repellent like Badger Anti-Bug Balm to ward off pesky mosquitoes.
