By no means am I a yogi, but I do enjoy the practice, relaxation and exercise that comes along with it. It’s the perfect trifecta for your mind, body and spirit. If you are thinking about trying yoga for the first time, here are eight easy tips to get the most out of your time on the mat.
1. It’s not a fashion show
You’ll be bending, stretching and moving your body in all sorts of directions. Wear something comfortable.
2. Get to class a little early
Get a good space for your mat, relax and just breathe.
3. Don’t take yourself too seriously
You will fall. It’s OK. Find your balance and try again.
4. Leave your worries at the door
Work, school, family, friends, tonight’s plans”¦ leave them at the door. Make it all about you.
5. Breathe
If you lose focus, breathe. If you can’t do a certain pose, breathe. If your mind starts to wander, breathe.
6. Don’t overdo it
There is a variation to every posture. If your body isn’t ready, don’t force it. Try an easier version or go into child’s pose.
7. Disconnect
Turn your phone and your mind off from the world. Connect with yourself.
8. It’s a practice
Even if you’ve been doing yoga for years, it’s still a practice. Nobody is perfect.
