DIY Dry Shampoo for All Hair Colors

Organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, vegan, nut-free: we’re so careful with the food we put into our bodies. We check labels and stick to tested and certified products. But are we as careful with what we put on our bodies? Personal care products, from cosmetics to toothpaste to shampoo, should be subject to the same standards as food. After all, if you wouldn’t eat it, you shouldn’t put it on your skin.

DIY Natural Dry Shampoo

When it comes to shampoo, natural and organic options exist, but to know exactly what ingredients you’re being exposed to, you’ve got to make it yourself. And, why not? Making dry shampoo is incredibly easy, and in many cases, it’s much less expensive than other all-natural options.

Dry shampoo works to soak up oil and clean your hair, and thanks to sweet smelling essential oils, leaves hair smelling fresh without the use of water. It’s great to use if you have gone a few days without washing your hair or on those busy mornings when you just don’t have time to wash it. Dry shampoo can save you a lot of time, energy and water.

Here are recipes for each hair color:

Blond Dry Shampoo

Ingredients
1 Tbsp. arrowroot
1 Tbsp. tigernut flour
1 Tbsp. brown rice flour
1 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. bentonite clay
7 drops of essential oil (I use 1 drop of each: lavender, eucalyptus, lime, tea tree, rosemary, peppermint, lemon)

Black Hair Dry Shampoo

Ingredients
2 Tbsp. oat flour
1 Tbsp. brown rice flour
2 tsp. bentonite clay
1 tsp. arrowroot powder
3 drops of lavender essential oil
2 drops of lime essential oil
2 tsp. activated charcoal (about 8 capsules)

Chocolate Brown Dry Shampoo

Ingredients
2 Tbsp. arrowroot
2 Tbsp. cacao powder
3 drops peppermint essential oil
2 drops lime essential oil

Red Hair Dry Shampoo

Ingredients
2 Tbsp. arrowroot powder
1 Tbsp. tigernut flour
1 Tbsp. oat flour
3 Tbsp. cinnamon essential oil
3 drops lavender essential oil|
2 drops rosemary essential oil
2 drops tea tree oil

Gray Hair Dry Shampoo

Ingredients
2 Tbsp. oat flour
1 Tbsp. brown rice flour
2 tsp. bentonite clay
1 tsp. arrowroot powder
3 drops of cinnamon essential oil
2 drops of lime essential oil
½ tsp. activated charcoal (about 2 capsules)

Directions

  1. In an airtight container or jar, combine the powder and essential oils. Mix with a wooden spoon or shake well until combined.
  2. Massage dry shampoo into hair using your hair or wide brush.
  3. You can use it right away or keep sealed for up to 12 months.
