No wonder it’s called glühwein in German, translating literally to “glow wine.” What a perfect way to describe this cozy cocktail! Hot mulled wine warms your body and spirit, is a delight to make and just feels right this time of year. Whether you’re taking a stroll in the winter woods, warming up after a snowball fight in the backyard or making merry at home with family and friends, this spiced winter cocktail will get you glowing with holiday cheer.

Festive Holiday Hot Mulled Wine

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle 750 ml dry red wine
  • 1 orange sliced into rounds (plus additional for garnish)
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks plus additional for garnish
  • 2 star anise plus additional for garnish
  • 2-4 Tbsp. honey to taste

Instructions

  1. In large pot, combine wine, orange slices, cloves, cinnamon, star anise and 2 Tbsp. honey. Stir together.
  2. Cook on medium-high heat until mixture begins to simmer; reduce heat to low, cover and let simmer for 15 minutes or up to 3 hours.
  3. Using strainer, remove orange slices, cinnamon sticks, star anise and cloves.
  4. Taste and adjust sweetness with additional honey if desired.
  5. Serve in heat-proof glasses or mugs as is or garnish with orange peel, star anise and cinnamon.
