Calcium is available in several different forms, most commonly calcium citrate and calcium carbonate. Calcium citrate differs from its carbonate cousin in a few important ways.
It does not require stomach acids for optimal absorption, so it can be taken on an empty stomach and may be less likely to cause upset. However, calcium citrate contains a smaller amount of elemental calcium (the mineral that's essential for bones and teeth), so you may need to take more of it to get the right amount for you.† If you're not a fan of swallowing capsules, you'll be pleased to know calcium citrate can also be found in liquid form.
