Homemade “Apple Pie” Dog Treats
[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]With fall here, it’s the perfect time to bake a batch of healthy homemade dog treats with the fun and functional flavors of apple, cinnamon and ginger. Oat flour is perfect for cut-out treats as it doesn’t contain gluten that can to stick to the work surface. You won’t need to dust your countertop, cookie cutters (or kitchen!) with flour. Oats also create a lighter, crunchier treat. These autumn-inspired cookies include the goodness of apple, flax, peanuts, ginger and molasses for a drool-inducing bite chock-full of nutrients for skin, coat, joints and digestion. Feel free to use any shape 2-inch cookie cutter your dog desires.
Homemade “Apple Pie” Dog Treats
- 2 cups oat flour
- 3/4 cup grated apple (cored, or applesauce, pumpkin puree or mashed banana)
- 3 Tbsp. peanut butter (unsalted, no sugar)
- 2 Tbsp. flaxseed meal
- 1 Tbsp. blackstrap molasses
- 1 Tbsp. water
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. ginger
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper or silicone baking mat.
- In medium bowl, whisk together dry ingredients.
- Add wet ingredients, except water, and combine until dough comes together. If too dry, add water.
- Using rolling pin, roll dough to ¼-inch thick.
- Using 2-inch cookie cutter, cut shapes and arrange on lined cookie sheet.
- Bake 25-30 minutes or until treats look very dry. (Note: For softer treats, bake less time.)
- Transfer to wire rack and cool completely.
Shelf life & Storage
Crunchy: Due to apple in treats, refrigerate in airtight container up to 3 weeks or freeze up to 2 months. (Note: For longer shelf life, dehydrate treats in 135-degree oven for 2 hours to reduce moisture from apple.)
Soft: Store in airtight container in refrigerator 1-2 weeks, or freeze up to 2 months.
