Agave Syrup and Agave Nectar

If you've taken sugar off the table and you're searching for a way to sweeten your favorite foods and beverages, you may want to consider agave nectar. Also known as agave syrup, this viscous sweetener is made from the juice of several different species of the agave plant. While it may contain the same or more calories than sugar and other sugar substitutes, agave nectar has a lower glycemic index than table sugar.

How to use agave nectar
Depending on the source and how it was processed, the color and flavor of agave syrup varies -- darker agave typically yields a richer flavor. Because agave tends to be sweeter than sugar, you may only need to add a small amount to your tea, baked goods or as a topping on fruit, pancakes and waffles.
