5 Eco-Friendly Easter Swaps

For those of you who celebrate Easter, you probably associate it with baskets of plastic grass overflowing with confectionary treats. But as they say, when you know better, you do better. So this year instead of buying a premade basket stuffed with GMO and high fructose corn syrup filled junk, here are five ways you can build a more eco-friendly and organic Easter basket.

5 Eco-Friendly Ideas for Easter 1. Start with a reusable basket

I always had the same Easter basket my whole life. In fact, one of my girls uses it now. The memories are priceless and even though decluttering is all the rage, there is something to be said for generational holiday traditions. While it may be tempting to grab the cutesy preassembled basket from the big box store, because I know you’re busy and tired and UGH it’s another holiday someone is going Pinterest-crazy over, a personal touch is all it takes to make a celebration your own.

2. Skip plastic grass

Five minutes with a paper shredder and some newspaper and you have all the filling you need. Fabric, old baby blankets, paper bags and even tissue paper from previously used gift bags are perfect for lining baskets.

3. Consider non-food treats

Jump ropes, coloring books, homemade play dough, even movie tickets can be a great way to bring joy to your little ones this holiday.

4. Swap for organic choices

Finding organic options is easy these days. Everything from organic lollipops to fair trade organic chocolate is readily available. And honestly, if you remember what that gross chewy not-quite-chocolate-what-the-heck-is-this-stuff bunnies tasted like, you will be more than willing to treat your kids to the real thing.

5. Use plant based dyes

No longer are those petroleum based dyes of the past your only option. New plant based food dyes are popping up on the scene. Or, with a little experimentation, you can even make your own from plant sources such as beets, carrots and more!
