Use mustard in any dish where you want to add heat. It's helpful to know that mustard doesn't become really hot until a non-acid liquid (preferably cold) is added to the seed. (Water will release the heat, but vinegar won't, for example.) The best way to fully release the flavor, then, is to mix the seed with warm water for about ten minutes before adding it to a recipe. To stop the development of the flavor, on the other hand, you can add an acidic liquid, like lemon juice, vinegar, or wine, to your recipe.

Heart-Smart Air Fryer Fish Sticks

  • 1-1/2 lbs. wild cod (cut into strips)
  • 1/2 cup almond flour
  • 2 Tbsp. coconut flour
  • 1 tsp. ground mustard seed
  • 1/4 cup avocado oil
  • 1 egg white (omit if watching sodium intake)
  • I lemon (juice only)
  • Black pepper (or red pepper, to taste)
  • Pinch sea salt (omit if watching sodium intake)
  1. In medium-sized mixing bowl, combine dry ingredients.
  2. Add egg white and oil and mix well.
  3. Coat fish with mixture.
  4. In air fryer basket, arrange fish strips. Squeeze lemon juice over each strip.
  5. Set fryer to Air Fry setting at 400 degrees F. Cook 5-6 minutes, flip fish and continue cooking 2-3 minutes.
  6. Serve with salad and favorite dipping sauce.
