Pubic Hair 101: Everything You Wanted to Know but Were Too Afraid to Ask

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Hitting puberty does fascinating things to humans, including making us sprout pubic hair. Many of us don't think much about those little curlies beyond them catching on undies and lingering in bathtubs. But pubic hair is important. Pubic Hair “It helps protect against infection by stopping the spread of bacteria and other germs,” says Dr. Karen Toubi, a board certified Beverly Hills obstetrician and gynecologist and Cliovana practitioner. Pubic hair traps sweat, oil and bacteria, in order to protect the vagina. One study’s findings showed that women who removed all their pubic hair reported having more sexually transmitted infections. “It also keeps the genital area cool by getting rid of heat,” Toubi says. “And pubic hair acts as a cushion during sexual activities and intense physical activities, reducing irritation.” So it shouldn't be a surprise to learn that there's no medical reason to remove pubic hair. “It serves a purpose!” Toubi says.

How to care for pubic hair

Despite its natural usefulness, pubic hair needs proper care. Avoid trouble by following some trusted advice.

Practice good hygiene

Caring for your pubic hair means simply rinsing it regularly with water, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. You don't need fancy soap. In fact, that can make matters worse. “Avoid using harsh or scented products that may cause irritation and disrupt the skin's natural balance,” Toubi says.

Stay fresh

Change your underwear every day, and opt for breathable, cotton materials, Toubi says. Cotton underwear lets your nether regions breathe, keeping vaginal yeast infections away.

Shorten properly — or not at all

“Trim your pubic hair as you see fit, and do what makes you comfortable,” Toubi says. “There is no right or wrong when it comes to styling your bush.” That said, avoid over-trimming or shaving too closely, which can lead to ingrown hairs, redness, rashes and discomfort. “Leave some length for protection and to minimize irritation,” Toubi recommends. “Removing pubic hair can make the skin more sensitive and increase the risk of irritation and infection. It's a personal choice how much hair is removed, but it's important to use gentle methods and avoid harsh chemicals that can harm the skin.”

Pubic hair removal options

If you do want to tame your triangle, you’re following age-old trends. Pubic hair grooming apparently dates back to the ancient Greeks and Egyptians. Lucky for you, modern times offer many choices when it comes to styling your pubes. Here’s how to smartly approach each of them, according to Toubi, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the health services department of the University of California, Berkeley:

Trim

Trimming is the safest choice, as long as you don't stab yourself or cut your skin. It also carries the lowest risk of infection. Scissors do just fine, though you can also use a trimming tool meant for pubic hair or beards.

Shave

Shaving gives you a closer cut than trimming, but keep it to a max of once a week. Individual strands of hair are at different points in their cycle of growing and shedding. Waiting a while between shaves gives more of your hair a chance to grow in, which means you're less likely to trouble your skin. “Shave in the direction of hair growth to minimize irritation, ingrown hairs and infection,” Toubi says. “Do not use dirty or old razors, as they increase the risk of infection. Always use a clean and sharp razor.” Use soap or shaving cream as a lubricant, and consider allowing the area to soak a while, whether in a bath or under running shower water.

Wax

Hot wax removal pulls hair up from its root. Upside: Results last longer. Downside: Ow! You also risk getting burned and could wind up with small cuts or other skin damage that's imperceptible to the eye. If you want to head to a spa for hair removal — likely a wax — make sure the provider is a licensed professional, preferably with a lot of experience, who “meets industry standards for waxing or whatever else you want done,” Toubi says. For example, the applicator should not be double-dipped in wax. “Improper hair removal techniques can lead to infections like folliculitis or cellulitis,” Toubi says. “Choose carefully.”

Depilatory creams

Depilatory creams remove more hair than shaving, But they’re filled with chemicals, which dissolve hair where it meets the skin. The docs don't recommend them, no surprise, because they can really do a number on the genital area.

Laser/electrolysis

Laser hair removal will get you closest to ridding your pubes forever. It kills hair at its follicle. But it’s your most expensive option and usually requires several sessions. The procedures are generally safe when a licensed professional does them, though burning and skin discoloration is possible. You also might have swelling or redness for a few days afterward.

Final note

Remember: Pubic hair is hair. There’s no shame in embracing it. And don’t fret if over the years it grays or takes on a different feel. “Similar to scalp hair, pubic hair can change in texture or color naturally as women age,” Toubi says.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_text_separator title="Featured Products" border_width="2"][vc_row_inner equal_height="yes" content_placement="middle" gap="35"][vc_column_inner width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="172630" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" img_link_target="_blank" css=".vc_custom_1706812264207{padding-right: 7% !important;padding-left: 7% !important;}" link="https://www.vitacost.com/preserve-razor-shave-5-system-for-women-pink-mint-yellow"][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="172629" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" img_link_target="_blank" css=".vc_custom_1706812292134{padding-right: 7% !important;padding-left: 7% !important;}" link="https://www.vitacost.com/eos-ultra-moisturizing-shave-cream-lavender-jasmine"][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="172628" img_size="full" alignment="center" onclick="custom_link" img_link_target="_blank" css=".vc_custom_1706812313884{padding-right: 7% !important;padding-left: 7% !important;}" link="https://www.vitacost.com/alba-botanica-very-emollient-cream-shave-coconut-lime"][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]
