Melatonin is a derivative of the amino acid tryptophan. In humans, melatonin is primarily synthesized in the pineal gland and is released mostly at night to make falling asleep easier and improve the quality of sleep. Sleep is governed not just by habit, but by hormones. The production and release of melatonin in the brain is linked to time of day. Melatonin production ramps up when it's dark and tapers off when it's light.
