Cloves come form the dried, unopened flower buds of a small evergreen tree native to the fabled Spice Islands.
Today, we travel to Madagascar Zanzibar, Sri Lanka and other exotic lands for our Grand Cloves. The Intense bouquet and rich color lend a remarkable flavor to a variety of foods.
A pinch of Ground Cloves adds spicy depth to gingerbread, cookies apple sauce fruit muffins and spice cakes. It's also a secret ingredient in barbecue and cocktail sauces. Blend Ground Cloves with maple syrup and drizzle over cookies sweet potatoes and winter squash.
They have a strong, sweet, fruity taste that's also sharply hot and pungent. And can leave your mouth feeling a little bit numb.
The warm, lingering flavor of cloves works well with both sweet and savory dishes. But be sure to use them sparingly as their potent flavor and aroma can easily overpowered other spices.

Fun Fact: In the 1600s, the Dutch gained control of clove production in the Spice islands by destroying all of the clove trees except those on a single island. Anyone found smuggling out trees was sentenced to death.
